Specialist Structures

Our Special Projects team is headed by Hugh Morrison (Director). With an enthusiasm for difficult or unusual projects this team frequently works with materials and methods outside the bounds of traditional construction. The group has a particular interest in projects of architectural and artistic merit.

Special Projects won the Institution of Structural Engineers (NW) Design Award 2008 for a project constructed outside the North West region. This structure consisted of a spiral glass and stainless steel staircase which also featured on the Grand Designs TV programme.

Special Projects recently completed a complex internal fit out of Castlefield Church in Manchester, with the insertion of a free standing mezzanine structure of unusual geometric form.

The team has expertise in glass, stainless steel, tension structures, fabrics as well as more traditional materials. Completed structures include staircases, canopies, balconies and fit out projects.

The team has specialist knowledge of engineering timber structures including SIP (Structurally Insulated Panels) and glulam; keeping abreast of developments as an active professional member of the UK SIPs Association. The team, working with MBLA Architects won a 2009 RIBA award for Schaefar House which was constructed using the SIP technology.
